Henri David Thoreau

Henry David Thoreau was an American philosopher who is credited with starting both the ecology movement and providing a basis for the civil rights movement.  He was a strong believer in civil disobedience as an obligation when laws were unjust.  He was a great inspiration to me in my adolescence.  I remember her quotation about "when a man does not keep step with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears the beat of a different drummer. Let him march to that beat, however measured and far away."  (I am paraphrasing slightly.)  He also wrote that "a man is rich in proportion to those things he does not own," a very un-American thought, indeed.
